I was shocked when I called Marie Nails for an appointment, only to find that they were completely booked up for the entire month! I was in desperate need of a manicure and really wanted my nails done before our Mini Sakura Meet-up this weekend, so I decided to try somewhere new~
I went to Sakura Nail & Spa on the lower east side in Manhattan. I called them two weeks in advance and they had lots of openings, they were able to get me in with no problem at all....I wonder why? MAYBE BECAUSE THEIR PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS. Ugh, I'm too ashamed to even say how much I spent on this manicure. $20 gel removal, are you kidding me??? It's not like they were that difficult to remove since they were falling off anyway, and most places do that for free!
And I'm not even that satisfied by the quality of the manicure or the salon experience either, but I'll get to that later...
Here are my sakura nails that I got done at Sakura Nail & Spa for Sakura Matsuri...

This manicure took two freaking hours. For two hours, I expect it to be impeccable but upon close inspection it's a bit sloppy. My nails don't feel as smooth & invincible as they usually do with the gel.
I didn't get exactly what I wanted either...I didn't feel that they had much of a wide color selection, I wanted hot pink glitter but they didn't seem to have any. I also had to ask a few times to see their sticker selection (for some reason the lower east side location doesn't do acrylic 3D art, just stickers...the upper east side does though), and even then the lady brought me just stars. When I asked if she had any flowers, she came back with these white ones...I would have preferred pink. Don't get me wrong, this manicure came out pretty but it's not what I wanted and the rest of my experience doesn't make me feel any better.
The salon is also set up with two seats and two manicurists at each station. I can see how this would be nice if you're going with a friend, but it's not so nice when the woman next to you brings her little kid that is climbing all over the place. I don't go to a nail salon to babysit or make friends with little kids, I go to relax...
The receptionist was extremely sweet and I liked her a lot. Most of the manicurists were pretty quiet. For some reason, the lady who did my nails was way too amused that I picked flower stickers. She kept talking about them and then saying something in another language & laughing. It made me uncomfortable. I definitely prefer the sweet & friendly atmosphere at Marie Nails.
Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I probably won't be going back there. When I really want something, it's hard for me to restrain myself...but the price I paid at Sakura just isn't worth it, no matter how desperate I am.

That is so bizarre! When I got those stickers, the receptionist brought over this entire book filled with stickers that I could flip through. :\ Also, I recalled they had like at least 3 or 4 different pink glitter swatches when I was looking at it? I don't know... I think it really depends on who you end up with as your manicurist, unfortunately. -___- I've been there twice and it was a different experience both times, in kind of an unsatisfactory way, so I don't think I will be going back there again as well!
ReplyDeleteI know! I remember you saying that, so I couldn't wait to flip through all the stickers but for some reason my manicurist was against letting me see them. That's too bad. For the prices they charge, I expect impeccable quality & service. It's just not worth it :(
DeleteYeah, I feel you. If it's overpriced, I guess I couldkind of let that slide, if the quality was worth the price. But with how my manicure came out too, the gel is all messy all over the place under the nail :/
ReplyDeleteEh. I think Marie Nails is where it's at. They might not have as much space or decore, but they totally win in quality and price.
Btw~ Elizabeth Center in Chinatown has a lot of stickers (flowers, lace, hearts,..etc.) that you can use on your nails for much cheaper.
Yeah, exactly! Marie Nails is SO much better. You're right...I shoulda just gotten the glitter gradation done and then did the stickers myself. I should have also removed my old gels myself too, but how could I have known they were going to charge me for it? They didn't mention that at all :(
DeleteBeautifullll nails! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteUgh, that's so awful!! T^T I HATE it when manicurists do that totally obvious I'm-laughing-at-you thing too... I mean, I know we're all guilty of gossiping & such, but they could at least wait until after you've left to run their mouths! *grr*
ReplyDeleteI do think it looks pretty though, but I'm so sorry you had to go through that :(
Yeah, it made me feel bad :( I hate when people do that. Like you said, all girls gossip but I would never do it right in someones face!
DeleteI'm sorry you had such a bad experience!! :(
ReplyDeleteIt sounds weird to say this but I think the difference between the Japanese manicurists and the non-Japanese manicurists is huge. The very first time I went to Sakura, I had a great experience! The polish was neat, and the leopard design was more detailed and neat than when I had it done at Marie. The manicurist listened to what I wanted and gave me suggestions about the design.
The time I went with Jessie last time, I got a Chinese woman, and while the quality of the manicure wasn't terrible, but like Jessie said, I noticed that there was polish sticking out in weird places and I actually had to file them when I got home. Annoying.
I think only the "regulars" get the good service since they all request their manicurists when they make appointments. = =
Oh, I know what you mean...I was a little disappointed when I got a Chinese woman instead of one of the Japanese girls. Ah well...
DeleteOmg! I feel so bad for you! I wouldve gotten up and walked out, actually i have done that before, i just cant stand being uncomfortable when i am paying good money. On the bright side, atleast now you know not to go there again! They look pretty to me though, for what its worth >.<
ReplyDeleteI wish I was more aggressive like that! You're right, I gave it a try and now I know not to go back there. Yeah, this manicure has been growing on me...it is pretty :)
DeleteMmmm yeah, the first time I went there I tried to copy some nails that I saw in I think my NailMax mag, but they didn't have any airbrush tools or anything like that. at first I was happy, since it was lolgettingmynailsdidforthefirsttime, but as time went on I kept looking at them like... :/ meh, this is plain, not even good. It looked pretty random. I don't know anything about getting nails done, next time I'll probably go to Marie Nails and see how their services are. Probably grow my nails back really long and let them work their deco magic on my hands xD
ReplyDeleteOoh, you should definitely check out Marie Nails sometime. They're really good at copying designs and they make sure that you get exactly what you want!
DeleteI just bought those press on nails :\!
ReplyDeleteOhh I have some of those! I just love being pampered and getting a manicure...and I'm totally addicted to the invincibility of gels too!
